Here are some of my suggestions:

  1. Work hard.Language learning is never easy, and it requires hard work. You have to practice EVERY DAY (not everyday)!
  2. Learn from native speakers. No offense, but if possible, learn from native speakers, either online or in person. I'm sure some Chinese teachers of English are really good at pronunciation, but I've met some really bad ones who are also famous. Another reason for this is if you want to be "厉害", you have to learn from the best. I have tried to learn Chinese from my Canadian friends, and you can guess the result. English is less precise than Mandarin in some ways, but it's still pretty easy to distinguish between native and non-native speakers. Just because someone's English is understandable, doesn't meant his/her English is good or correct. Modern internet technology has made it easier to learn English from a native speaker online. An online lesson can provide benefits that traditional classroom situations cannot offer, such as recording the entire class, screen sharing, and a higher level of focus.
  3. Practice transcription (听写). Listen to a recording, and write down what they are saying, and have someone check it with you. Apparently, this is one of the fastest ways to become comfortable in understanding a language.
  4. Describing things. Most people have no idea how hard this is. Choose a picture and try to describe what you see, like "看图说话" you have all done in elementary school. Give yourself a requirement for how many words to use. It's also a way to practice your ability to think in English.
  5. Using review mode to see mistakes. Write an article and have a native speaker review it using "Review mode" in a MS word document. Using "Review mode" allows you to see the mistakes you made and the corrections so you can make note of them for future reference.
  6. Learning new words from words you know. MS word also has a thesaurus (同义词典), which shows words with similar meanings, so you can use that to learn new words.
