Grain is dried by gravity feeding down through a series of superimposed compartments forming a drying toner with hot gas passing horizontally through the grain in each compartment, temp. and flow rate of the hot gas passing through each compartment. Both become progressively less from top to bottom of the tower, all compartments operating below atmos. pressure. Used for drying grain such as corn, wheat, maize and other cereals to about 15% moisture content soon after harvest. The compartments form modules from which dryers of widely different capacities can readily be made up with height variation. Standard height dryers can be ranged side-by-side to give extra capacity with area extension only.
