PURPOSE:To economically obtain a gas diffused electrode having a highly active catalyst by forming an oxide of manganese through thermal decomposition of carbonide of manganese and applying it to a collector after it is mixed and kneaded with an activated carbon, conductive material and water repellent binding agent. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of manganese sulfate is prepared and the aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is dropped to it while the former aqueous solution is sufficiently stirred. After the stirring for about an hour, obtained precipitate, namely manganese carbonate is filtered in the non-oxidizing ambient (inactive gas ambient) and it is washed with cooled water until PH becomes about 6.5 and then sufficiently dried up. The obtained manganese carbonate is thermally decomposed for 1-3hr at a temperature of 300-400 deg.C within an electrical furnace. Next, an adequate amount of water is added to a mixture of the manganese oxide of 30pts.wt., activated carbon of 40pts.wt., fluorine resin of 20pts.wt. serving as the water repellent binding agent and black lead of 10pts.wt. acting as a conductive material. The pasted mixture thus obtained is applied to the nickel net acting as the collector and is dried up. Thereby, a gas diffused electrode in the total thickness of 0.4-0.45mm. can be obtained.
