This disclosure provides a powertrain control system and an electrified vehicle strategy. A vehicle is provided that includes a motor, an electric machine, a traction battery, and a controller. The controller is programmed to run the engine during an acceleration or constant speed ride of the vehicle and in response to a state of charge of the battery falling below a first threshold to charge the battery. The controller is further programmed to operate while the engine is running and to stop the engine in response to the first time the state of charge reaches a second threshold, the accelerator pedal is released, or the vehicle is being decelerated. The controller may be further programmed to prevent starting of the engine during the release of the accelerator pedal or deceleration of the vehicle and in response to the state of charge falling below the first threshold. The controller may be further programmed to run the engine while charging and in response to acceleration or constant speed travel of the vehicle to charge the battery.
