Building his own packing shed has turned out to be a good move for Alan Cleaver. Since opening Columbia Basin Onion last June, the Hermiston, Ore. onion grower has been able to match a perfect crop with a perfect market, an opportunity that he says only comes along once or twice in a lifetime. With three decades of experience growing onions, Cleaver decided in 2011 to build his own packing shed. Construction began in early 2012, and the 66,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility was up and running on June 22, 2012.
