Dell Technical Support

If you ever experience a problem with your computer, and thus think that the Dell Technical Support Team should be your first port of call, THINK AGAIN!

Recently, I did just this, paid £29 for Dell to diagnose the problem, after which I was told that I would have to buy a new hard drive - £80 by itself or £150 if I wanted an engineer to install it. Luckily, I sought a second opinion. The actual problem was a corrupted partition and thus the hard drive didn't need replacing! When I called Dell to complain and claim back the £29 for misdiagnosis, they told me that this fee is unrefundable.

By the way, this malfunction occurred just four weeks after the warranty expired. That possible coincidence aside, it seems that Dell is content to charge customers for a diagnosis which then yields further revenue as customers are misled into thinking that they need to purchase a replacement hard drive.

A corrupt partition could be caused by  faulty drive. Without more information, it is hard to tell if Dell was right or wrong.

Overall, however, I'd agree that is not worth the cost to call Dell for out of warranty support. You've found these forums. They are free, and the help is great. Use them in the future if you have issues.
