It’s summer, and that means long lines at fairs, amusement parks, concerts, conventions, movie theatres and other tourist attractions.

But in Canada, you’ll probably never find yourself sweating through the summer heat in an hour-long line to use public transit.

Those were the hellish circumstances facing commuters in London on Thursday, as a 24-hour strike by subway workers forced millions of people to take above-ground transit on their way to and from work.

The strike stopped London’s Tube trains in their tracks and forced commuters to travel by bus, train, foot or bicycle, in a city of more than eight million people.

Many frustrated commuters took to Twitter to vent about the strike and post photos of the unbelievable lines.

Several Twitter users made light of the strike by comparing London transit to the notoriously overladen buses and trains in India, where people are known to hang on the outside of the vehicles.
