field to-nijbt as follows : ''The net result of
yesterday's election as nearly as cunboslatod
at this hour 8 p. m. Tuesday is about as fol-
lows : The Republicans have carried the llrst
second and third congrossiomd districts
while the Fusionisti bavo carried tho fourth
and fifth. The Republicans have carried
both branches of tho legislature by a strong
majority reaching perhaps two-thirds of
each of the houses on the popular voto.
Governors Davis and PlaUtod bavo
each over 72000 votes with
the probabilities in favor of Plainted coming
out a few hundreds perhaps a thousand
ehead. The rosult is a surprise to us and
equally so to the mass of tbo Democratic
party in Maino. Our canvass was never ac-
curately taken and it showed on Wednesday
last a total vote lor Davis of a trille ovsr
7600 with an assured majority of 0000
in the minimum. In four days precoodingi
of the election we lost over 3000 votes by
means woll known to the matmgors of tho
national Democratic campaign arid which do
not call for further specifications) from me.
The total cost is estimatod at from $75000
to $100000 and tho money all came from
beyond the state. Such scones wore nevor

Now Orleans Sept. 14. Mr. J. Dunn a
printer went sailing with hit family. A
squall upset the boat and four
of his children were drowned. Uim-
solf wife and daughter were saved. The
accident was not of such a serious nature as
to mtke the docking of the ship necessary
and tho damages had boen repaired by the
engineers on Djnrd. The vessel was only
delayed about twenty hours

New York Sept. 14. The German forgor
Emanuol Unnauor who was arrested on
Monday last on the arrival of the steamer
Celtic was arraignod yesterday before
Uni ed States Commissioner Deuol. Hanauer
forged tho names of a number of merchants
to checks to the amount of from 18000 to
20000 marks on the Industrial bank at
linden and having obtained the monoy
on some of those checks be fled to this
country. In Hanauer's trunks when sr-
rosted wero found a largo number of the
forged checks. When beforo tho commis-
sionor ho waived examination and consented
return to uermany .wiinout exiraoiuon
proceedings being taken. - He was then cc n-
mittod to Ludlow street jail to await the ao
tion of Consul-General Schumacher.
A Brained Beauty.
New York Sept 14. In the last act of
the -Grim Goblin'- at Wallack's theater last
evening while Mile. Etberia the flying fairy
was about to take the flying leap she fell
from the shoulders of one of the performers
and though be caught her at the knees she
struck her face on the floor cutting a
gatb on her chin and knocking out one
tooth besides sustaining soveral bruises
about the head. She wat taken to her rooms
in the Ashland house and at midnight her
brother said she was resting easy and would
soon be well again. In the early part of last
month when the "Grim Goblin" was
first produoed at Wallack's Etheria't
father- Goorgo Conquest while mak-
ing one of hit prodigious jumps fell
tnd broke his leg. The performances ware
interrupted fo.1 a week when Gen. Corquost
took his father's place. During the first per-
formance on the reproduction of the play
and just a week after the accident . to the
elder Conquest an actor made a plunge from
the top of the stage the wire by which his
fall should have been prevented having be
come dislodged. He was injured so badly
tbat he died with much pain but bravely
kept the stage and did all that remained for
him to do in the hut scene.

Tanner't fast and assorts again this morning
tbat they would Hud him fasting on tho forty-
second day of his task. To-day beginning
at one o'clock is tho eighth day of his task
and ho is of course suffering the pangs of
hunger although he tries very hard to con-
ceal his feelings and appear as if he did not
caro anything about it Ho is watched
clossly by several parties who are interested
In a wager that he will relinquish his fast at
the end of ten days.
A Captain Drowned
Now York Sopt 14. Captain Thomp
son formerly commander or the Great
Eastern but recently of the steamer Eng-
land was swept overboard from the latter'a
dock off Newfoundland September 10th
and drowned.
