The Philadelphia papers announce the death of the
«wealthiest inhabitant of that city. We copy irom
the the Inquirer the' following article on the Bub-
je£li-*r JV. O. Tropic.
Mtv Jacob Ridge way, who since the'decease of
Stephen Girardi has been regarded as the wealthi-
est citizen of Philadelphia, departed this life, yes-
terday mornitiji at 11 o'clock, at his residence in
Chesnut street, upposito Independence Hall, in the
70tli year of his age. Ife had been ill lor some days,
ana was attended in his last htiurs by several of our
moat eminent physicians. Mr. Ridgwny was knock-
ad down in the Htreet a few weeks ago, by a horse
andvehiclo, and! was indisposed tVom the time of the
accident. Ho was a self made man, and died woi th,
it is probable, about $6.000,000 in property of vat i-
ous kinds. In early life Mr. ilidgeway was a ship-
carpenter, he was subsequently American Consul at
Antwerp, during a most criticul period of the last
Snropeati war.
He also resided for sometime in Paris, and then
Itttlráed to tliis country, wliere, his health failing he
was recommended to visit the South. He did so,

aouroe of his disenso, and he returned to Philadelphia.
