Synopsis

For centuries, the Demon Slayer Corps has sacredly kept the location of Swordsmith Village a secret. As the village of the greatest forgers, it provides Demon Slayers with the finest weapons, which allow them to fight night-crawling fiends and ensure the safety of humans. After his sword was chipped and deemed useless, Tanjirou Kamado, along with his precious little sister Nezuko, is escorted to the village to receive a new one.

Meanwhile, the death of an Upper Rank Demon disturbs the idle order in the demon world. As Tanjirou becomes acquainted with Mist Hashira Muichirou Tokitou and Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji, ferocious powers creep from the shadows and threaten to shatter the Demon Slayers' greatest line of defense.

In most villains of this franchise, we found depth in their background stories. Although this approach wasn't a fixed rule for all anime, I felt that this season needed more of it. This it used to contributed to the complexity of the villains, making them more organic and humanized. This form of development was consistent with the protagonist's evolving vision of considering only Muzan as the true villain, contradicting the perspective of other hunters who saw all onis as malevolent, without considering the victims among them. Furthermore, it used to generate empathy or, at least, a deeper understanding of their motivations. They weren't simply one-dimensional ... villains, but characters who conveyed emotion in their victories or defeats. Although there is a very brief flashback in the last episode that tries to address this complexity, the extremely limited time didn't allow for satisfactory development.

The development of the heroes with intriguing dramas was positive, but the execution is mediocre. Although flashbacks are a valid tool, their excessive frequency in Kimetsu no Yaiba becomes tiresome, especially when inserted in the midst of the battles of the three new heroes this season. This not only disrupts the rhythm but also seems like a lack of creativity. Although this technique prolongs the battles, there is no significant connection between the flashbacks and the confrontations, except for an isolated case. It seems to be a lazy resource from the author, who did not seek more effective alternatives to develop these characters.

If one of the heroes faced the possibility of death, mutilation, it would increase the sense of consequence, drama, and suspense. However, my greatest concern was focused on the secondary characters of the blacksmith village, a concern that should not exist for supporting characters. At this stage of the franchise, the repetition of the formula has become quite evident. The premise that the protagonists would face extreme challenges, suffer a lot, but in the end, everything would turn out well for everyone.

With no real risks for the protagonists and the anime failing to establish a convincing antipathy towards the villains, how then to create an epic climax? Perhaps through suspense? However, to build suspense, it is necessary to have unresolved mysteries, and there are few of them left. Furthermore, in this season, no significant new mysteries were introduced. The situation worsens even more for the climax when the anime incorporates comedic elements or a light atmosphere in moments that should be more delicate.

Despite the criticisms, the anime is not bad. I highlighted its flaws because few mention them, but its qualities are truly exceptional. Ufotable redefines entertainment standards with its high-quality production in terms of audio and visuals. Additionally, the director managed to perform true miracles by adding several scenes that significantly enhance the original material. Overall, it is a captivating work that instills the desire to watch and continue watching.

Mixed Feelings

The Swordsmith Village Arc is a bad sign for anyone who was concerned about issues that Demon Slayer has been presenting since Season 1, mostly concerning the overall plot from the larger down to the smaller details. This show is absolutely in love with presenting many new plot elements, and then choosing when, how much, and indeed whether they will explain anything about these elements. Information explaining Wisteria, the Demon Slayer (Nichirin?) Swords, the strikingly similar appearance of several characters, the abilities of characters, the history and motivations of characters, etc etc is given to us almost completely at random if it is given to ... us at all and sadly to say, in these 11 episodes we see a lot but learn very little.

Now the reason I have Mixed Feelings is because I think in some twisted way it's actually good to want to learn more. The fact that we care about these plot points now even in Season 3 means that we are still hopeful but it's looking a bit shaky. This season gets a 7 because the narrative is a mess. Only 11 episodes is not enough to explain what we just saw in a way that is satisfying. Sure, there were some tearful moments, and happy comedic moments, and some great fight scenes as well, but you don't really get time to breathe at the end and sit with the different characters about what just happened. Maybe this is an issue inherent with the Arc style that they are firmly committed to at this point. The first season felt like it had more flow and when we jumped to the next thing it didn't feel as jarring because our MC was just as confused about it as we were. Now that he is more confident and everyone seems to be on the same page it's more uncomfortable as a viewer to feel lost because it feels like we shouldn't be. When there's too many questions about how things work in this world and we've gone so long without explaining some of them it starts to turn confusion into frustration, and that's what may unfortunately end up killing this series in the long run.

There is a lot to be excited about with this series, but will it ever actually deliver on the promises that it makes? Will it put its money where its mouth is and actually explain these concepts, commit to the characters and the world it has created, or will it leave us out in the cold at the end like so many shonen before it? These are the questions you will likely be asking yourself at the end of this season. Overall it was still a fun watch. Definitely only watch this if you're a Demon Slayer fan and if you are, then it's a must watch. They've got us invested now but this does need to improve narratively to enter into the pantheon of Shonen Greatest of All Timers.

I dot't understand the hype around Demon Slayer anymore. The only positive I have to share is the animation style except for the "3D parts". The fighting scenes are colorful and really cool to look at. So far the good parts and now I will start ranting.

Story: so predictable... ofc the highlevel demons are "difficult" to defeat and OFC at the brink of the heroes death, they suddenly get a sobbing flashback then awakening and then lastly an energy burst. Suddenly their broken bodies are not so broken.... sounds familiar? Yes it was like the previous seasons.

I don't feel like we learned anything new ...
