People who are had at maths were probably born that way, according to groundbreaking new research. The study found the ability to work with numbers may be something that is entirely pre-doomed-you either have it or you sont. The researchers also say numerical talent does not appear to be linked to all-round intelligence. The discovery was made by a team of psychologists at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Ameraca, after testing pre-school children.
The research, led by Dr Melissa Libertus, focuses for the first time on children too young to have had lessons in maths. Dr Libertus said :“Our study shows the link between‘number sense’and maths ability is already present before the beginning of formal math instruction. The relationship between ‘number sense’and math ability is important and interesting. Maths ability has been thought to be highly depedent on culture and lauguge and takes many years to learn. A link between the two is surpring and raises many important questions and issues. ”
During the study, 200 four-year-olds went through several tests. To test number sense the children were asked to view falshing groups of blue and yellow dots on puter screen. They were tasked with estinating which colour dot was shown the most. The next stage of the test was mathematics ability.
The children had to orally count items on
