HP 5550 DN
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Our original Laserjet 5550 cyan toner motor finally packed in so we bought a replacement printer (same), This replacement printer is almost new  with only 31k paper count so was hoping it would last a life time since we rarely use it. HOWEVER, it has a paperjam fault inside the front cover.

The paper feeds from the wothout any issue but when it gets to the transfer kit is jams at the bottom in a scrolled up mess. we have tried both transfer kits both as new with same error so i assume it is a fault with the printer??? It does make a whining noise top right side looking at the front  - more than the older one did.

It is a 5550dn with one tray which we have added our extra 4 trays making it a tower configuration, surely that is irrelevant.

we know it worked fine when we bought it and it was moved very carefully. I did my usual in that I took our the toners, fuser and transfer kit to move making it a little lighter and it was VERY carefully moved.

conpletely baffled.

The printer was not broken, the issue must have had something to do with the way we reinstalled the toners. On opening the printer up it was clear everything was working as it should but that the toner shutter rail was being obstructed by something from working properly. we took the toners out again and the mechanism was working as it should. we then reinstalled them and the printer toner shutters worked as they should.

A strange issue and one i had never come across before. USERS ERROR

You have a diagnostics menu on this printer which may prove useful. Go to the menu and choose the item disable cartridge check and when the printer says ready, diagnostics mode in the display, open the front cover and remove the cyan toner from the bottom slot. Close the door and after checking printer message goes away and ready diagnostics appears on the display, go to the report menu and choose config page and see if it prints or also jams. If it jams is it in the same place and if possible attach a picture. If it does not jam put the cyan toner back in the slot and then watch as you close the door to make sure the shutter that covers the drum moves away to reveal the drum. If it does not then that could be your issue.

Many thats for that. So we now know that on the replacement printer the shutters on the toners are not opening as they should - they do on the old one. This was probably a result of moving it without the transfer kit installed. Is there a method to reset the mechanism?

I will admit that we had to mess with the arms the transfer kit slots into, the grey feet since they have to be in the closed position (upright as though the transfetr kit was locked into position) to close the door so we used a screwdriver to move them down afterwards to reattach and install the transfer kit.

in future I will not remove the transfer kit as it is light and obviously not designed to be moved with it missing

cheers in advance for your time
