Help please - iomega home media nas has deleted itself

i have a 1TB iomega home media nas. Somehow it has managed to delete all the files off itself or it appears to have done.

Firstly it disappeared off the network,to be honest it does this frequently but this time i needed to update my mac to see the drive again but now i see the drive and the top level folder structure but all the files no longer exist and the drive is reporting it is empty. This is the same when the pcs i have connect to it. The files have gone.

please can anyone help as i cant find any solution to this and i have only managed to find two other cases of this happening but with no solution :(

DId you find a solution for this yet? I have the same problem and am trying different recovery programs now without much luck.

I have experienced the same problem just this morning.

I could not connect to my iomega storage device, rebooted my laptop, the device itself and my router and after a while it seemed to be ok but voila, the device seemed to have reconfigured itself and was showing a full terabyte of availabilty with years of work gone.

The device is still under warranty so I have logged an incident with Iomega support online. It's sunday so I don't want expect to hear from them today and with tomorrow being a bank holiday I am not sure if they are open but I will call them up. I have lost everything... I also backed up data to a folder labelled data on the same drive so I am absolutely disappointed and completely devastated with this.

Help someone please?

Mine has done they same but unfortunatly it is out of warranty, I contacted Iomega but they wanted 40 euros for tech support before they even listened to what the problem was and offered no further assistance if they couldn't fix it over the phone. I just wondered if they managed to repair it or did you have to send it for data recovery, Thanks

I have encountered the exact same problem this morning. The only thing I can think of is that about 10 days ago I upgraged the firmware to the latest version - as recommended by iOmega. Its a pity that iOmega techsupport is absolutely useless.

Hi fellow victims of Iomega,

I had the exact same issue - after restarting my iomega home media drive, all folders were showing as empty in the storage manager application.

I did hours of research, and even installed ubuntu to read the drive directly as a linux hard drive. Folders were still showing empty. I finally concluded that data restoration was the way to go, although I had some concerns about losing file/folder structure. I tried photorec (from cgsecurity.org), and it found files but did not seem capable of restoring file structure. Note that iomega uses XFS, and *not* EXT for the file system on this drive. Perhaps that's one reason I could not read the files from Ubuntu.

I kept searching for other tools and found an inexpensive XFS recovery tool that is doing a fantastic job of recovering both files and my file system structure: Raise Data Recovery for XFS, available from Avangate (http://www.ufsexplorer.com/rdr_xfs.php) for just over 20 Euros. It took 7 hours to scan through about 1.2 TB of data on the Iomega drive, and it is restoring the approx. 24,000 files to an external 2TB drive right now. I'll have to do some manual re-naming of directories, but that's about the extent of the pain.

Question -to se thi softwar, did you need o take the actual disk outof the box and conect it directly to the computer ?

In order to use the Avangate softare - did you need to remove the drive from the NAS box and connect it to you PC directly ?

i took the drive out in mine tried several programs, managed in the end to save some of my photos but not much else. Since then when trying other software for recovery the drive itself has now given up completely.

So could it be that the nas loses the info when the drive is close to failure?

I just had the same problem, I bought me device about 2 years ago and IOMEGA wont provide support unless I provide a proof of purchase, even though I registered the product right after I bought it. Bunch of BS. I found a way to recover all my files from the deleted drive.

1. download "Restore My Files" program.
2. take the NAS drive out of the enclosure.
3. connect the drive to a desktop like a regular hard drive.
4. partition and reformat the drive for NTFS with Disk Mangement to allow your computer to see the drive.
5. Run Restore My Files on the drive you just installed.

I got all my pictures and songs back. IOMEG sucks and I will not buy them ever again.

I have just joined the ranks of disgruntled Iomega owners. My HMNDHD decided its time was up, and did nothing other than the flashing blue/orange LED. It doesn't show up on my Windows network at all. Alas, stupidly I had nothing backed up, so panic ensued!

After some initial research I tried removing the HDD (1TB Seagate Baracuda), and plugging into another machine running Ubuntu, via a USB adapter. The device showed up OK, but the partitions were seen as being empty. More panic!

Further digging brought me to this thread. Following sgerwinat's recommendation of Raise Data Recovery for XFS, available from Avangate (http://www.ufsexplorer.com/rdr_xfs.php), I decided to part with 25 or so Euros.

This turns out to have been a very good move. My main concerns were to recover the data, (many years of home accounting and family photos). I'm less interested in the NAS's file system, as I won't need that again. Anyway, with the aid of Raise Data Recovery I've been able to browse my files on the USB connected HDD removed from the Iomega device, and copy them to another disk - relief. I am running Windows 7 BTW.

I am not out of the woods yet, as I haven't had time to recover all the files I need to. I have found the Data Recovery software to be a little buggy perhaps, in that it gets so far then hangs when it has trouble recognising an individual file. I have found it better, albeit slower, to copy data one folder at a time. I seem to get less hangs that way. Another evening or two should hopefully see everything copied across, AND A BACKUP SYSTEM PUT IN PLACE, :)

Overall I am happy with this solution, and well worth the modest price for the software.

THIS IS WHAT I DID FOR MY PC; I have a Win 7 - 64bit - i7, 24 gigs Ram, Zero Raid, I could only see that my Iomega was online, but it had no drive letter and I could not read the data on it, in Control Panel>Administration Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk management I could right click and at one point I was only able to mark the partition as active, so I did so.
The option to change drive letter and path would not work no matter what I did. There were no other options there to help assign it a (new) drive letter that worked. I even searched the Windows Help to no avail, until I did the following. I needed to determine if the drive was still good.
So took the Iomega External 1TB hard drive and connected to a laptop using Windows Vista and bam, the laptop seen it, I can access all my files, but had to access as admin, so I learned my Iomega HD was still in good working order. I had even tried uninstalling the drivers and that did no good.
So I reconnected it to my big machine Win7 - Home Premium i7 - 24gigs - Ram, Zero Raid setup.
I went into Device Manager and I uninstalled the Iomega External HD at the "DEVICE MANAGER>DISK DRIVES" location, make sure its at the Disk Drives and "not the Universal Serial Bus Controllers", and with out restarting the machine I used the "Scanned for Hardware Changes" and it located the Iomega and it brought it completely back online and assigned it a drive letter all in one shot. Then I went into Control Panel>Administration Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk management to see if it had assigned it a drive letter and it had. Then I went into Explorer and there is was with an assigned drive letter and complete access. Prior to that it was only online and visible in disk management only, but not visible anywhere inside window period, it would not show in explorer/anywhere. Problem Solved!!! Now I'm watching a movie off of it #42 Jackie Robinson. GOOD LUCK!!

Some of my folders were showing as empty, but when I plugged my external drive into my computer USB directly, they had content. I think I've exceeded the size for this device. I have a 4TB external hard drive plugged into it.

This may be resurrecting this thread but perhaps if it saves someone the pain I have gone through, this might be justified :)

My symptoms were> device responded over the network but no shares available. Likewise no ability to create new shares or modify setting (generic error encountered)

I found mounting the SATA drive directly into Windows or Linux did not allow access.

I did stumble across the fact either SSH was already enabled or could be enabled via the web interface. That I could authenticate using putty over SSH with username: root and password: soho

I then eventually found that as SSH was enabled that SFTP was available too. (Tried SCP copy but I don't have good knowledge of Linux so couldn't figure out why copies would fail :S )

Downloaded Filezilla to Ubuntu VM and created new SFTP connection. Authenticated again fine (create a specific site for SFTP protocol) and dragged dropped across my folders. This might sound slightly complex but ultimately check if SSH allows access with username and password above. If not, try enabling in web interface. If it does, try Filezilla.

Once I've copied across all my data I will factory reset device and see if its OK again.

If not, might remove the SATA drive and use casing as lunchbox, pen holder or similar.

Found this thread trying to set up my iOmega device. Now I'm scared. I thought I copied all my music, movies etc. onto it last week, using the Twonky software (cuz I couldn't figure out how to use either of the two iOmega interfaces that seem to be there). Now when I open the iOmega interface (well, it's a many-minutes-long operation to "re-connect"), the media files are empty. What's up? Are there some simple instructions for setting up this nightmare piece of hardware somewhere? I just want a dumb box that holds all the media I can't fit on my MacBook Air!
