Dear Sir,
Library is essential to us students as well as to the teachers,
and our university library is providing a very good service. But I
would suggest that there is still room for our library to improve
its service.
For example, our university library may consider subscribing to
more foreign publications, including both professional journals and
diverse magazines, with which we may keep up with the latest
developments in various disciplines and broaden our view of the world.
Also, there are usually long lines waiting for assistance in our
library. It is time for our library to open more assistance windows
and lengthen the service hours.
We will be much grateful if you consider my suggestions.
Yours truly,
Li Ming

It is generally recognized that confidence is the first
stepping-stone on the path to success, and conversely, a lack of
confidence will invariably lead to failures. As we can see from the
picture, the goal keeper looks worried for he fears that he is not
“big” enough to block the shot. Meanwhile, the shooter seems to
be discouraged for, in his mind, the goal keeper “fills” the whole
goal and he has no chance to score. Actually, for lack of confidence,
both players lose even before the game is over.
Similar situations can be found everywhere in our daily life.
For instance, the Chinese soccer team always becomes nervous when
confronted with the South Korean team, and the team players seem
unable to pluck up enough courage to compete against the South Korean
team, and naturally they lose almost all the matches. Also, it is
because of a lack of confidence that many youngsters fail in some
“crucial” examinations, job interviews or careers.
In a word, no one may hope to be a success in his life or work
unless he learns to be confident of himself whenever confronted with
a new problem or challenge.

Dear Sir,
I write to ask you to find me a right candidate for my financial
assistance. The child should of course be from a poor family in the
remote area of our country but he or she would also have to be excellent
in studies in his/her local school. Preferably he/she lives in Gui Zhou
province, for my parents worked there for about 10 years and told me
a lot about the poverty of people there.
I plan to send the child 100 Yuan per month to help cover his/her
tuition and daily expenses. And as a college teacher of English, I
wish to offer some help in his English studies if needed.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours truly,
Li Ming

As is vividly portrayed in the pictures above, a young man has
written the name of “Beckham” on his face and the other man is having
his hair cut like Beckham’s hairstyle, which is a most typical
phenomenon among young people today. It mirrors a reality in our
society which should be taken into account seriously.
The reason behind this phenomenon can be illustrated as follows.
To begin with, young people today advocate individualism, which leads
them to adore ones who are famous. They particularly worship those
pop stars and football stars. Not only do they behave like their idols,
but they speak and dress like them as well. Furthermore, while
mechanical learning and tests are emphasized in high schools or in
universities, value education is being ignored to a large extent,
which has also certainly contributed to the phenomenon. Most people,
including some educators, believe that the grades in exams are a sign
of intelligence and future career performance. It is only natural
that value education is so widely neglected in our schools.
Judging from the evidences offered above, I think young man
should devote more of their attention or efforts to their studies
or career advance. In the meanwhile, value education should be placed
at the top of our school curriculums. Only in this way can we expect
a healthy and intelligent young generation to shoulder the duty to
further develop our country.

Dear Mr. Wang,
After serious consideration, I decide to submit my resignation
as the editor of our Designs & Fashions. And I would appreciate it
very much if you would accept my resignation.
What makes me come to this decision is that I find myself not
suited to the job of sitting all day in the office. And besides, I
plan to attend the National Entrance Examinations for Masters’
Programs in January, which means that I have to devote a lot of time
to the preparation for the exams.
I am really sorry to submit my resignation at this busiest time
of our agency, but I will stay through the summer and help you find
a replacement for my position.
Yours faithfully,
Li Ming

Old people need loving care and attention but the fact is just
opposite: the old people are being neglected by the young generation.
As illustrated in the picture, four young guys standing on the four
sides of the ground, obviously the grownup kids of the old man, are
acting like goalkeepers, trying to keep their old father from
entering their own homes. All of them want to shun their obligations
towards their parent.
Young people may argue that they are too busy to show concern
for their old parents or that they have already had a huge burden
on their shoulders that they can not afford to take care of the old.
However, nothing can excuse themselves from the moral and legal
duties towards their parents. In addition, the traditional virtues
of Chinese civilization demands respect and care for the old and any
contrary behavior is totally unacceptable and absolutely shameful.
To solve this problem depicted in the picture, our government
should set up laws to protect the rights of the old, while at the
same time a publicity campaign is highly needed to promote the
traditional values of respect and care for the old. Only in this way
can we expect a more harmonious and healthy society in the future.

Wise people used to say that one’s journey through life can be
divided into many sections and one finish-line of a section is just
the starting-point of another one. This is most vividly illustrated
in the given picture, which shows that a young runner, sweating all
over, is breasting the tape. Obviously he has reached the finish-line,
but as marked on the race-track, the finish-line is also the starting
point of another race. It means that the runner will have to embark
on another long run.
This picture has profound implications for both our society and
us human beings. Our country, for example, has developed rapidly in
terms of economy and science and technology. We have accomplished
in about two decades what other industrial countries used to achieve
in a century. But no one can deny that there is still a long way to
go before our country becomes a prosperous and powerful one. In other
words, what we have achieved today can only serve as the
starting-point of another long journey of development and progress.
The same is true of us human beings. For instance, many of those who
take part in the national entrance exams for masters’ programs will
be admitted by some graduate schools. For them, it is certainly a
happy end or a finish-line. But can anyone deny that the success is
also the starting-point of another three years of hard work?
In a word, life is a just cycle of starts and finishes. With this
awareness, people can cope with what they will encounter in the future
better and confront all the challenges more calmly and confidently.

These two pictures are both interesting and instructive. From
the pictures, we can see that a flower, shielded from the thunderstorm,
grows pretty well in the warm-house, but when moved out, the flower
can not withstand the wind and rain, and starts to wither. Several
of its petals are already on the wet ground. Evidently, flowers
growing up in the warm-house cannot survive a severe storm.
The implications of these pictures for our life are obvious:
overprotected children may grow up happily and healthily, but more
often than not, they cannot adjust to the life in the real world.
Born and bred in a protective home, they have become so dependent
on their parents that they will turn to their parents for help
whenever they are confronted with any difficulty. The result is that
they don’t know how to solve problems by themselves, they dare not
make their own decisions, and worst of all, they do not know how to
live a worthy life. Consequently, their life will be a failure.
Personally, I believe that parents should place more emphasis
on the cultivation of such qualities as independence, confidence and
courage in their children. Only in this way can the children grow
up fully equipped to meet whatever challenges that life may present
and be happy and successful.

This is a very interesting picture of a lovely American girl
dressed in traditional Chinese costume with a sweet smile on her face.
She wears a pearl necklace, colorful ribbon, ear rings, and other
decorating things that are characteristic of the clothes of a Chinese
minority nationality. It is obvious that as a result of our open-door
policy, more and more foreigners visit china and become interested
in our national culture, which is making it go international.
There is no reason to make a fuss about this phenomenon. With
the rapid development of technology and economy, the world is
becoming smaller and smaller, and international cultural exchanges
have become more and more frequent, which is inevitably improving
our mutual understanding and friendship with other countries.
As Chinese citizens, we should respect our own national culture
and learn useful things from the culture of different nations, which
will enable us to make great progress in many ways. I believe a happy
and bright future is awaiting us if we make every effort to promote
cultural development both nationally and internationally.

Among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is probably the
noblest. It is of the utmost importance to the human beings. Everybody
not only needs love, but also should give love.
As is described in the picture, “love is a lamp which is brighter
in darker places.” This is indeed true. People in darker places need
more light than ordinary people. Maybe even a dim light can give them
much hope for a better life and progress. Maybe just a thread of light
will call forth their strength and courage to step out of their
difficulties.
For instance when someone is starving to death, just a little
food and water from you may save his life. Or when a little girl in
a poor rural area drops out of school because of poverty, just a small
sum of money from you may support her to finish her schooling and
change her life; you have given love which is like a lamp in a dark
place where light is most needed.
So to sum up, we should offer our help to all who are in need.
We expect to get love from others and we also give love to others
so when you see someone in difficulty or in distress and in need of
help, don’t hesitate to give your love to him. I believe then the
relationship between people will be harmonious and our society will
be a better place for us to live in.

As is shown in the pictures, we can see clearly that with the
increase of commercial fishing, the number of fishes sharply
decreased. In one picture, there were various kinds of fishes and
only one fishing-boat in 1900. On the contrary, in 1995 there was
only one fish, but many fishing-boats.
The purpose of this picture is to show us that due attention has
to be paid to the decrease of ocean resources. Owing to over fishing,
the number of fishes has obviously decreased. If we let this situation
go as it is, we won’t know where fish is in the future. By that time,
our environment will suffer a great destruction.
Therefore, it is imperative for us to take drastic measures. For
one thing, we should appeal to our authorities to make strict laws
to control commercial fishing. For another, we should enhance the
awareness of people that the ocean resources are very vital to us.
Only in this way can we protect our ocean resources. Also, I believe
that we human beings can overcome this difficulty, and we will have
a bright future.

The above graphs make it easy to draw a conclusion that a
developing USA sees a growing population during nearly 200 years.
Thanks to the progress in technology and economy, however, at the
cost of some wildlife. As human population increases, the species
of wildlife decrease, and some are even on the brink of extinction.
We may cite a variety of reasons for this situation. But the most
contributing one is human being’s weak sense of wildlife protection
which leads to the decrease of wildlife as a result of cases of illegal
hunting and killing of wildlife for profits. The destruction of
ecological environment also plays a pushing role. Less and less
forest and pasture coverage area and more and more pollution and soil
erosion due to population problem make it even more difficult for
the wildlife to survive. Hence, unfortunately but naturally a soaring
number of human population comes in tandem with a descending variety
of wildlife.
Ecological environment construction and protection is a pressing
and long-term task. To tackle the problem, the US government needs
to enhance its people’s wildlife protection awareness and even the
backup of some relevant laws and decrees. What’s more, it should
pour more investment into the wildlife protection sector in a bid
to create a better environment for the living wildlife to coexist
harmoniously with the human beings.

Recently, more and more people have seen varieties of promises
either from TV, newspaper or from other media. As is shown in the
cartoon, even a hen has learned how to promise. We all know that hen’s
duty is to lay eggs which should undoubtedly consist of most
elementary part. But the hen promises what she should do!
With the development of the society and the improvement of
people’s living standard, more and more attention should be paid
to the improvement of quality of service. Therefore, many enterprises
and departments promise to better their services so as to meet the
people’s need better. They are also pleased to invite people to
supervise what they have done and will do. But much to our surprise,
some of them just say something that they should do. These promises
are only laughed at by people.
In my opinion, doing more is better than promising more, because
people are willing to be served really. All we should lay more
emphasis on what we do and how we can virtually improve the level
of service. Only in this way can we make people satisfied with what
we do.

Education quality has always been a concern among both the
educators and the public, but the problems inherent in our education
system continue to exist. As reflected in the picture, a large number
of high school graduates are admitted into a university, which is
compared to “an assembly line”, and are turned out as a lot of men
or women of the same type. These college graduates may have learnt
a great deal of knowledge of the same kind, but it’s difficult for
them to be creative.
The reasons behind the problem are obvious. Our traditional
education places much emphasis on knowledge and testing over
creativity or self-expression. Students are encouraged more to learn
from the books and gain good grades while different ideas or original
notions tend to be dismissed as unhelpful and worthless. Besides,
the expansion of education scale in recent years only adds to the
problem. While colleges are more concerned about the number of
students accepted, the quality of education will inevitably suffer.
Colleges simply can’t spare any time or energy to cultivate
creativity or innovational ability in the students. The ultimate
victims of this deficiency are not just the students themselves, but
our nation as well. It’s hard to imagine that a nation lack of
creative talents could survive in such a competitive world.
It is urgent to solve this problem. Our government, educators
and the public should make concerted efforts to redesign our
education system so that a new generation of creative students can
be put out, which will surely be enormously beneficial to the future
of our whole nation.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I write this to place a complaint against the English-Chinese
dictionary I bought from your E-store on the internet on Dec. 13th,
2005.
The dictionary you sent me was a great disappointment, for when
it arrived, it was far behind the date you promised to send it to
me. Besides, the wrapping looked worn and dirty. And more
surprisingly, when I opened the dictionary, I found more than 20 pages
of it missing (p. 123 to p. 136).
I wish you would look into this occurrence immediately and send
me a replacement as soon as possible. Or I will demand a refund.
Yours faithfully,
Li Ming

The virtue of helping others is frequently practiced and seen
in our daily life. As can be seen in the picture, a young man is giving
his seat to an old lady on the bus, helping a disabled man up the
escalator, donating his blood and giving his money to charitable
causes.
Being sympathetic and helping others are a necessary component
of a civilized society. Whenever friends are in trouble, neighbors
are in difficulty or even a stranger is in urgent need, one should
offer his hand immediately. Showing care for others will make this
world feel warm and make our society more civilized and harmonious.
Unfortunately, however, apathy and other uncivilized occurrences are
reported to be happening almost every day in our society. It is a
stain on our national character and a violation of Chinese tradition,
and it will certainly render our economic achievements to nothing.
Being sympathetic and helping others should be encouraged and
extolled in our culture. And it is certainly part of our efforts to
build a more harmonious and civilized society. Should everyone show
his care for others, our society will become a really enjoyable place
to live in.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Ma,
Please accept my thanks for the very pleasant time I spent
together with you for the past month. I very much appreciated your
hospitality. Driving along the coast at sunset, swimming at the sea,
eating those delicious seafood, talking about our childhood days over
tea in the evenings, and doing many other wonderful things. I know
the beautiful month will keep me happy for a long time.
Thanks again for your warm hospitality and goodbye! I hope I can
return your favors at my home very soon. Don’t forget to remember
my love to the lovely kids.
Truly Yours,
