第六节 动词前缀“out-
“out-”前缀动词有“胜过”、“超过”的意思，这些动词都可以用作及物动词。
1. bid vt 出价
Will anyone bid 5 dollars for this painting? 有人出五美元买这幅画么？
outbid vt （拍卖等中）出价高于他人
They can buy whatever they need to buy, and they can outbid anyone.
他们可以买他们需要的任何东西，并且他们可以出价高于任何人。
2. brave vt 勇敢面对；冒…之危险
a. He had braved death a hundred times. 他出生入死达百次之多。
b. We decided to brave the storm. 我们决定冒暴风雨出去。
outbrave vt 勇敢面对;以勇气胜过
a. to outbrave one's fear. 以勇敢战胜恐惧。
b. Who can outbrave my great boys? 谁还能比我的伟大的孩子们更勇敢呢?
3. distance vt （from）使远离；不与…接近
outdistance vt 在行进上超过，把…抛在身后
Tom outdistanced all his competitors in the mile race.
汤姆在一英里赛跑中胜过所有竞争者。
4. outclass vt 远胜过；远超过
He was outclassed from the start of the race. 比赛一开始他就落后许多。
5. outdo vt 胜过
You will meet many people who will try to outdo you, in school, in college, at work.
你会遇到一些人他们总是试图超过你，在中学，大学，在工作中。
6. fight vt/vi 打架；战斗；作战
outfight vt 战胜，打败
The champion outfought his opponent. 那位卫冕者打败了他的对手。
7. fox vt 用计欺骗；使迷惑

8. grow vi 生长；长大
outgrow vt 长得太大或太高不适于（原有的衣服等）；长得比（本人的哥哥等）更快或

9. last vi 继续；持续
outlast vt 比…耐久，比…活得长
Rome Columns outlast the civilization that built them.
古罗马文化业已衰亡，而以其文明所建的圆柱现在依然存在。
10. live vi 生存；继续生存
outlive vt 活得比…长久
The old gardener outlived the rose. 老花匠见证了玫瑰花的死亡。
11. march vi 前进
outmarch vt 以行进较快或较久而超过；赶过
Our army outmarched the enemy. 我们的部队赶在敌人前面。
12. match vt 和…匹敌；是…的对手
No one can match him in archery. 在箭术方面没有人能够和他相比。
outmatch vt 胜过；超过；优于
He is outmatched in skill and endurance. 技术与耐力不如人。
13. number vt/vi 计有；总共
We numbered 20 in all. 我们总共有二十人。
outnumber vt 数量上胜过
The enemy outnumbered us. 敌人比我们人数多。
14. play vt 打（球）
outplay vt （在比赛中）打败；胜过
The English team was outplayed by the Brazilians. 英国队被巴西队打败。
15. range vi（指枪炮，弹丸）射程为
The gun ranges over six miles. 这炮射程超过六英里。
outrange vt 射程超过
Our guns were outranged by those of the enemy's cruisers.
我们大炮的射程不如敌人巡洋舰上的炮。
16. ride vt/vi 骑马（等）
outride vt 骑得比.. 好或快
He outrode his pursuers. 骑得比追赶者快。
17. rival vt 为…之竞争者；与…同样好
Cricket cannot rival football in excitement. 板球远不如足球够刺激。
outrival vt 竞争中胜过（某人）
He was outrivaled by his opponent. 他被对手打败。
18. run vi 跑
outrun vt 跑得比…快；跑得比…好；超过
His ambition outran his ability. 他的野心超过了他的才能。（眼高手低）
19. sail vi/vt 航行越过；航行于；驾驶（船）
He sails his own yacht. 他驾驶自用游艇。
outsail vt 航行得比…快
This team outsails us. 这个队比我们航行得快。
20. shine vi/vt 发光；照耀（字面或喻）
outshine vt 照得比… 亮；胜过，优于；使相形见绌
In the season of joy I present my sincerest wishes and kindest thoughts.
May this Christmas outshine all the rest.

21. stay vi 逗留；停留
outstay vt 居留比… 长久
outstay one’s welcome. 停留太久而令人生厌。
22. vote vi/vt 投票赞成
outvote vt 比…得更多选票；以多数票击败
a. But with ‘one country one vote’, African, Arab or Asian countries, or indeed
Europeans voting en bloc, can easily outvoted United States.
但是由于“一国一票”，非洲、阿拉伯或亚洲国家，甚至欧洲国家集体投票可以轻易地胜过

outwear vt 比…耐穿；比…经久

24. weigh vt/vi 称…的重量；称
outweigh vt 比…更重；比…更有价值
Do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages? 弊多与利么？
25. wit n 机智；智慧
outwit vt 以机智胜过；以狡计击败
The thief outwitted the police and got away with his loot.
小偷以狡计骗过警察带着赃物逃跑了。
