Airtag Reverted to Old Location

I am in the middle of an overseas move, so I put an airtag in one of my boxes so I could follow my personal effects along the journey. I saw it leave my house and travel to a warehouse. There it sat for a week. Then I watched it travel across a few states in the US to reach Long Beach, California, and there it sat for a week. The next time I checked, it showed the airtag back at my home., the home which it left two weeks ago, and the home which I moved out of shortly after my airtag left.

My belongings are supposed to travel by ship, so it's possible they are already out over the ocean somewhere, and perhaps there are no iPhones reporting back. But if that is the case, why would my airtag report that is is home, and not at the Long Beach warehouse where it was last seen?

I’m also in the same boat. I placed an AirTag in a car being shipped. It was tracking fine for a week, then it reverted back to the last location that I was near it. The most interesting part is that if I check it on my MacBook, it continues to show updated locations. My iPhone continues to show old locations. Makes no sense.

Just had this as well so thought I would add my experience. After missing a bag on our way from Australia to Thailand for 13 days (don't get me started on the customer service!), we bought 4 AirTags for the way back and placed in our 4 check-in bags. Our flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok was delayed but the Find My app on the iPhone showed all 4 bags located at Bangkok airport. Sadly on arrival at Sydney, the bags were still at Bangkok airport. At least we knew where they were and were first in line at baggage services to report the delayed bags. However, the next thing that happened was weird: one of the bags started reporting its last location in Koh Samui - around when we were last in proximity of the bag. This is even though we had clearly seen (and screenshotted) a more recent location for this bag.

After reading this page, I tried to restart my iPhone but it diodn't appear to make any difference. Fortunately I had an iPad to try and Find My fortunately showed the bag in Bangkok along with the others. After checking on my iPad, my iPhone then refreshed and is reporting correctly as well. To me, this seems like some software bug so hopefully this will be addressed soon as I certainly found this quite concerning. It was only that I had a screenshot that I could prove to myself that I wasn't imagining the bag had made it to Bangkok.

I never found out why it was happening, but after nearly three weeks, it picked up and started tracking again. This air tag is in our personal effects, which are being shipped overseas. I suspect they were stuck in a warehouse where no one with an iPhone was nearby, and perhaps there is a bug (or an unexpected feature) that makes it revert if it isn’t seen for a few days.

same Happened to me, put an AirTag on my cat when I took them to the vet. Yet the AirTag updates to my house. They have been at the vet for 4 days and the location continues to update at my house. I called the vet and they even sent me pics to prove she is not at my house. There is a definitely a glitch and this is was a trash purchase.

I have this same issue and it's definitely a server issue on Apple's side. As usual no response from Apple on this. The way I got it to update was I had to sign out of iCloud on the iPhone that had out of date locations (since another iPhone I have, had the correct locations) and I resigned back into iCloud and then watched the Find My app go through almost like history of tracking until it finally after about 30 to 40 seconds updated to the more recent location.

Be nice if Apple support would reply to this instead of leaving it open ended with a stupid response of, "restart your phone."

I am also tracking household goods from AK to virginia and my air tags has been saying WA for the past month and half and i’m wondering if it’s even accurate because the company that coordinated it says it’s in transit to VA but my airtags says otherwise. we’re past our RDD by 7 days now. Has anyone figured out if they are actually accurate or it’s just messing up.

Hi Eikichigai,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand your AirTag is showing an incorrect location, and we'd like to assist. Have you restarted your iPhone since this issue began? This can sometimes resolve issues like this.

I’m having the same issue — I put an AirTag in my luggage for an overseas flight and it didn’t make it on my connecting flight. I saw it travel with me on the first flight but didn’t make it on the plane, now it reverted back to the origin location not even 24 hours after. Not sure what is causing this but restarting my phone and the article wasn’t helpful. I was hoping to have the last known location handy to let the airline know when looking for my bag but not I can’t. Hoping it updates soon.

I see that a few people have had the same issue that I had but I wasn't sure if any had tried a different Apple device to see if the Find My app on it reported the same. I was wondering if the issue was happening only on the device that had previously been in proximity of the AirTag at the old location or was it ever showing in an old location on a device that had not been near the AirTag at the time? Using a separate iPad fixed the issue for me, almost as if it reset the connection.

FYI, my luggage story had a happy ending. After overcoming the AirTag issue by viewing from another iPad, I was able to track the bags heading to the gate in Bangkok and then the receipt into Sydney. I also watched as they sat in Sydney for 3 days before being sent in a courier dropoff. Knowing where they were was comforting.

I am glad this worked for you. But this did not work for me after restarting my iPhone. My watch, my iPad, and my iPad mini all reverted back to an earlier date. I don’t know how to fix it, I myself am re-locating tracking my household goods and a vehicle. Traveling to Hawaii. Able to screenshot the iPad mini that showed that it made it to the island. But then it reverted back to an old location date. I wish they would fix this because I feel like I wasted $200 on 8 AirTag.
